Discord Nitro Unlocks Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition Perk
Celebrate Nitro's 10th anniversary with access to 50+ games, cloud streaming hours, and exclusive discounts, all for the same price.

Discord, the popular communication platform, is leveling up its premium Nitro subscription with a significant new perk: a "starter edition" of Xbox Game Pass. This integration is part of a new "Nitro Rewards" program, marking the 10th anniversary of the Nitro service, and aims to give subscribers even more value without an increase in price.
For eligible Nitro subscribers, this starter edition of Xbox Game Pass opens the door to a library of over 50 console and PC games. While not the full, unlimited Game Pass experience, it's a compelling offering that includes popular titles like Fallout 4, Stardew Valley, DayZ, Deep Rock Galactic, Overcooked 2, and Grounded. On top of the game library, this tier also provides 10 hours of cloud gaming access each month, allowing users to stream select games directly from their Xbox library. Subscribers will also have the opportunity to earn Xbox rewards.
It's important to note that this specific Game Pass offer is designed for Nitro subscribers who do not currently hold an Xbox Game Pass subscription. The benefits are being rolled out gradually to all eligible subscribers over the next several weeks. The new perk will be available in a wide array of countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States.
Beyond Gaming: More Nitro Rewards
The Game Pass inclusion isn't the only new addition to the Nitro Rewards program. Discord is also sweetening the deal with a range of other benefits. Subscribers can look forward to exclusive discounts on popular gaming brands, including 30% off Logitech G, 15% off SteelSeries, and 20% off KontrolFreek equipment. Additionally, members will have more avenues to earn "Orbs," which are used to unlock various customizations for their avatar and profile on Discord.
Discord isn't just offering games; it's enhancing the entire Nitro experience, from hardware discounts to personalized profiles.
Crucially, Discord has confirmed that the price of Nitro remains unchanged, staying at $10 per month or $100 annually. However, it's worth noting that subscribers on the Nitro Basic and Nitro Classic tiers are not eligible for these new rewards, which are exclusive to the full Nitro subscription.
A Two-Way Street with Microsoft
This collaboration isn't a one-sided affair. Microsoft is also extending benefits to its own Game Pass subscribers, integrating Discord perks into their offerings. Starting later in May, Xbox Game Pass members will receive 250 Discord Orbs each month, along with extra Orbs for completing Quests, and exclusive discounts in the Discord shop. This reciprocal arrangement highlights a deepening partnership between the two tech giants.
This collaboration solidifies the bond between two tech giants, benefiting users on both sides of the gaming and communication divide.
Context: The Subscription Wars and Bundling
Discord Nitro has long offered a suite of enhancements for its users, from custom emojis and larger file uploads to HD video streaming and enhanced profile customization. Xbox Game Pass, meanwhile, has established itself as a dominant force in the gaming subscription market, often dubbed the "Netflix of gaming." This new partnership reflects a broader industry trend where platforms are increasingly bundling services to enhance perceived value, attract new users, and reduce churn in a highly competitive subscription landscape. It's a strategic move to create a stickier ecosystem for both Discord and Microsoft.
What's still unclear:
- The exact schedule for the "gradual" rollout of these perks to all eligible Nitro subscribers.
- A comprehensive list of all 50+ games included in the Game Pass starter edition, beyond the examples provided.
- Whether this initial partnership might evolve into options for higher Game Pass tiers or deeper integrations within Discord in the future.
Why this matters: For existing Discord Nitro subscribers, this represents a significant value boost without any additional cost, making their subscription even more compelling. For Discord, it strengthens its position as a central hub for gamers, potentially attracting new users and retaining its current base by offering a tangible, high-demand gaming benefit. For Microsoft, it expands the reach of Xbox Game Pass, even in a limited form, by tapping into Discord's massive user base and deepening its integration with a key communication platform. This strategic bundling underscores the growing importance of ecosystem value and partnerships as platforms battle for user attention in the competitive tech landscape.
