Unknown Worlds Explores Xbox Test Features for Subnautica 2
Subnautica 2 may bring experimental testing to Xbox players, a first for the platform.

The developers behind Subnautica 2 are breaking new ground by exploring options to allow Xbox players to test new features early, similar to the experimental branches available to Steam users. This move, if successful, would mark a first for the Xbox Game Preview program, where typically only a single version of a game is available.
In a recent interview, lead developer Anthony Gallegos discussed the challenges and potential of bringing this capability to the Xbox platform. Currently, Steam players can access experimental branches to test new game features before they're officially rolled out. However, Xbox lacks such flexibility under the Game Preview framework, which is something Unknown Worlds aims to change.
"Every patch that goes out will go out on Xbox and Steam and the Epic Games Store, all of our store platforms at the same time, because we have cross-play," Gallegos explained. "We're even looking at trying to figure out, like, are there ways that we could do different branches with the Xbox? But that's still sort of the discussions we're having."
This initiative echoes the now-canceled Microsoft feature, Project Moorcroft, which aimed to introduce experimental demos for player feedback. Unknown Worlds sees value in reviving a similar concept specifically for Subnautica 2 on Xbox, potentially enriching the development process by involving more players in early testing.
Opting into beta branches can provide players a sense of involvement in the development process, offering valuable feedback that may shape the final product. While Xbox supports early access through its Game Preview initiative, it traditionally allows only one version of a game.
Context:
This development is significant as it represents a potential shift in how Xbox handles early access and experimental features. The introduction of such a feature could influence other game developers to push for similar capabilities on the platform. In Europe, where PC gaming is particularly strong, the ability for Xbox to offer similar early access experiences could help balance the competitive landscape.
What this means for you:
For Xbox players, this could mean earlier access to new features and a more active role in the development of games like Subnautica 2. It also suggests that Xbox is open to evolving its approach to early access, potentially leading to a richer gaming experience.
What's still unclear:
Several questions remain unanswered, such as the technical feasibility of implementing experimental branches on Xbox and whether Microsoft will support such initiatives. It's also uncertain how this will affect the Xbox Game Preview program's regulations.
Why this matters:
"Unknown Worlds Explores Xbox Test Features for Subnautica 2" is a headline that signals a potential paradigm shift. By pushing the boundaries of what's possible on Xbox, Unknown Worlds not only enhances Subnautica 2's development process but also sets a precedent for future games. This could lead to more dynamic and player-involved development cycles across the platform.
