Double Fine Employees Pursue Unionization with CWA at Xbox Studio
Double Fine, known for Psychonauts, files for union under CWA with NLRB.

Double Fine, the studio behind the Psychonauts series, is making a bold move toward unionization. They've filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on May 7, aiming to form a union under the Communications Workers of America (CWA). This involves all 42 regular part-time and full-time employees.
A Step Toward Unionization
They're pushing for unionization to improve creative excellence, diversity, inclusion, and worker quality of life. Double Fine's asking Microsoft for voluntary recognition while also filing an election petition with the NLRB. The CWA is happy with Microsoft's neutral stance, saying, "We appreciate that Microsoft has taken a neutral approach and agreed not to interfere in any way with workers' rights to organize unions."
Following a Trend in Gaming
Double Fine's not alone. Other Microsoft-owned developers have done the same. Over 500 World of Warcraft workers within Blizzard formed a union with the CWA in 2024. The Overwatch team followed with nearly 200 developers. ZeniMax Studios' quality assurance employees, known for The Elder Scrolls Online, ratified their union agreement with Microsoft last year. More than 450 Diablo developers at Blizzard voted to unionize with the CWA in August 2025.
Background: The Game Studio Landscape
Double Fine joined Microsoft in 2019, expanding its creative reach under Xbox Game Studios. The studio is known for unique titles like Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln. This unionization move reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry, where workers are seeking representation for fair treatment and job security.
How it Compares: Unionization in Tech
The tech world is seeing a rise in unionization efforts, especially where creative and technical labor is key. Similar movements are happening in other tech fields, like journalism and software development, aiming to tackle job security, fair wages, and workplace conditions.
What's Still Unclear:
- Will Microsoft grant voluntary recognition, or will it go to a formal election?
- How will this unionization effort impact the studio's operations and future projects?
- What effect will this have on other studios under Xbox Game Studios?
Why This Matters:
Double Fine's unionization is a big deal in gaming, showing a trend of workers protecting their rights. As studios push creative boundaries, a fair work environment is crucial. This move sets a precedent for others thinking about similar actions. If it works, it could inspire more unionization across tech and gaming, aiming for a fairer industry.
