Aqara P100 Sensor Review: Great Motion Detection with Apple Home Challenges
Aqara's latest sensor impresses with motion detection but struggles with Apple Home.

Aqara just launched the P100. It's the next-gen version of their vibration sensor, now with a 9-axis sensor array. This includes an accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer, making it better at detecting vibrations, tilt, and position. But it's also bulkier now—13 mm thick to fit a larger CR2450 battery. The design? Still minimalist, but now available in dark gray as well as white.
Features and Compatibility
The P100 shines in practical tests. It's responsive and offers detailed settings. Connected with the Aqara Hub M3, it supports Matter, meaning it can work with Apple, Google, and Amazon systems. Choose between Thread and Zigbee for connectivity. Zigbee lets you monitor movements and falls, but Thread limits it to basic door and window sensing.
If you're using the €30 sensor as a window or door monitor, Thread works fine. But Zigbee is where it really shows its capabilities. This flexibility is key for users planning their setup.
Apple Home Woes
Connecting with Apple Home? That's tricky. Users report it's a hassle. Sensors show up unnamed and confusing. The Aqara app is better for this, offering more intuitive customization for levels, vibrations, and fall detection.
Where you place the sensor matters too. No water resistance rating means you need a protective case if it's outside. Also, it's thicker than before, making it less discreet. But for those needing detailed condition monitoring, it's still appealing.
Automation and Shortcomings
Standard automation setups are supported in the Aqara app—trigger scenes, send notifications, sound alarms. But there's a catch: no timer for automations. Restarting the hub is the only way to stop alerts. This issue needs addressing.
- No water resistance certification
- Larger size
- Apple Home integration is limited
The Home Automation Scene
In home automation, the Aqara P100 competes with sensors offering a mix of features and integration. It excels in the Aqara ecosystem but falls short elsewhere, a concern for tech-savvy buyers.
Zigbee vs. Thread
Zigbee offers more functionality than Thread, especially for detailed motion detection. For basic use, Thread doesn't justify the P100's price.
Unanswered Questions:
- Will Aqara fix Apple Home integration?
- Will there be a timer function in future updates?
- Water-resistant version coming?
As smart homes expand, sensors like the Aqara P100 are key in automation and security. It offers detailed monitoring, but needs better integration with major platforms like Apple to stand out.
